The challenging economic situation in Greece has caused many Greek citizens to look for work in Canada, or try to immigrate here permanently. At the same time, many Greek-Canadians who had chosen to settle in Greece are returning to Canada.

Greece’s unemployment rate is twice that of other European Union countries, and the government is increasing taxes and cutting minimum wages in order to weather the economic crisis.

As a result, Greeks are looking to immigrate to Canada in order to find work and secure a better future for themselves and their families. Hellenic community organizations in Calgary and Vancouver are reporting a significant increase in inquires from Greek residents about working in, or immigrating to, Canada.

Canada is an attractive destination for such prospective immigrants because of its stable government, and the growing economy means more jobs will be available in the future. In fact, in British Columbia alone, there is an expected shortage of more than 60,000 workers over the next decade.
