New Nova Scotia Immigration Stream Geared Towards Students

The Government of Nova Scotia announced yesterday that it will be launching a new immigration stream called Nova Scotia Experience under the subset of the Provincial Nomination Program of the federal Express Entry program.

The Government of Nova Scotia announced yesterday that it will be launching a new immigration stream called Nova Scotia Experience under the subset of the Provincial Nomination Program of the federal Express Entry program.

In a provincial government press release, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said “The new immigration stream is a positive step to ensure well-qualified candidates, who are already working for Nova Scotia employers, have a viable immigration pathway.”

The program was created to respond to the numbers of recent international graduates who were failing to get selected under the Express Entry program. The purpose of the Express Entry program was to cut down on processing times so that more highly qualified immigrants could be approved to come to Canada. Average processing times under Express Entry are now at approximately six months.

This stream will work under the Provincial Nominee Program, and it will be available for highly skilled applicants who have worked for a Nova Scotia employer for at least one year. Under this program, individual provinces can nominate individuals to be expedited under Express Entry. It allows them to fast track individuals with skills or interested suited to a particular province or employer within that province.

Nova Scotia will be able to nominate 1,050 individuals under the Provincial Nominee Program, up from 700 last year.

The Nova Scotia Experience program will assist employers to retain better candidates as well as help highly skilled applicants find and retain stable employment in Nova Scotia. As with all immigration programs, it is expected that it will help find people who can contribute to the provincial economy and to improve the labour force.

This stream will serve as another opportunity for employers to find and attract high quality, valuable employees, who would otherwise have difficulty remaining in and working in Canada.

Nova Scotia Experience will be a pilot project for this year and follows Nova Scotia Demand, another immigration pilot project which was introduced in January of this year.
