Canadian Immigration and the Philippines

08-11-12

The 2011 Canadian census reveals that Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines is the fastest growing foreign language in Canada.  Last year, Canadian immigration from the Philippines was higher than from any other country.  Canada accepted 34,991 Filipino immigrants in 2011.  The reason for this is largely the Live-in Caregiver program, which allows caregivers to be sponsored by Canadian families with young children or elderly parents; this program is dominated by applications from the Philippines.  This Canadian immigration program alone is likely responsible for the 64% increase in Tagalog speakers in Canada between 2006 and 2011.

Tagalog is most prevalent in the Canadian city of Edmonton, followed by Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto respectfully.
